Verse 10.1
bhūya eva mahābāho śṛṇu me paramaṃ vacaḥ | yatte'haṃ prīyamāṇāya vakṣyāmi hitakāmyayā ||1||
O mighty-armed one, hear again My supreme words, which I will speak for your welfare, since you listen with delight.
Verse 10.2
na me viduḥ suragaṇāḥ prabhavaṃ na maharṣayaḥ | ahamādirhi devānāṃ maharṣīṇāṃ ca sarvaśaḥ ||2||
Neither the hosts of gods nor the great sages know My origin, for I am in every way the source of the gods and the great sages.
Verse 10.3
yo māmajamanādiṃ ca vetti lokamaheśvaram | asammūḍhaḥ sa martyeṣu sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate ||3||
Among mortals, one who knows Me as unborn, beginningless and the great Lord of the worlds is free from delusion and released from all sins.
Verse 10.4
buddhirjñānamasammohaḥ kṣamā satyaṃ damaḥ śamaḥ | sukhaṃ duḥkhaṃ bhavo'bhāvo bhayaṃ cābhayameva ca ||4||
Intelligence, knowledge, freedom from delusion, forgiveness, truth, restraint of the senses, inward calm, pleasure, pain, coming into being, passing away, fear and fearlessness—
Verse 10.5
ahiṃsā samatā tuṣṭistapo dānaṃ yaśo'yaśaḥ | bhavanti bhāvā bhūtānāṃ matta eva pṛthagvidhāḥ ||5||
Nonviolence, equality, contentment, austerity, generosity, fame and disrepute: these varied states of beings arise from Me alone.
Verse 10.6
maharṣayaḥ sapta pūrve catvāro manavastathā | madbhāvā mānasā jātā yeṣāṃ loka imāḥ prajāḥ ||6||
The seven great sages, the four of old and the Manus, sharing My disposition, were born of My mind; from them come these beings in the world.
Verse 10.7
etāṃ vibhūtiṃ yogaṃ ca mama yo vetti tattvataḥ | so'vikampena yogena yujyate nātra saṃśayaḥ ||7||
One who truly knows this manifestation and yoga of Mine is joined to unwavering yoga; of this there is no doubt.
Verse 10.8
ahaṃ sarvasya prabhavo mattaḥ sarvaṃ pravartate | iti matvā bhajante māṃ budhā bhāvasamanvitāḥ ||8||
I am the source of everything; everything proceeds from Me. Understanding this, the wise worship Me with heartfelt devotion.
Verse 10.9
maccittā madgataprāṇā bodhayantaḥ parasparam | kathayantaśca māṃ nityaṃ tuṣyanti ca ramanti ca ||9||
With minds fixed on Me and lives directed to Me, enlightening one another and always speaking of Me, they find contentment and joy.
Verse 10.10
teṣāṃ satatayuktānāṃ bhajatāṃ prītipūrvakam | dadāmi buddhiyogaṃ taṃ yena māmupayānti te ||10||
To those who remain constantly united and worship with love, I give the yoga of discernment by which they come to Me.
Verse 10.11
teṣāmevānukampārthamahamajñānajaṃ tamaḥ | nāśayāmyātmabhāvastho jñānadīpena bhāsvatā ||11||
Out of compassion for them, dwelling in their inward being, I destroy the darkness born of ignorance with the shining lamp of knowledge.
Verse 10.12
paraṃ brahma paraṃ dhāma pavitraṃ paramaṃ bhavān | puruṣaṃ śāśvataṃ divyamādidevamajaṃ vibhum ||12||
You are the supreme Brahman, supreme abode and highest purifier; the eternal divine Purusha, primal deity, unborn and all-pervading—
Verse 10.13
āhustvāmṛṣayaḥ sarve devarṣirnāradastathā | asito devalo vyāsaḥ svayaṃ caiva bravīṣi me ||13||
All the sages say this of You, including the divine sage Narada, Asita, Devala and Vyasa; and You Yourself tell me so.
Verse 10.14
sarvametadṛtaṃ manye yanmāṃ vadasi keśava | na hi te bhagavanvyaktiṃ vidurdevā na dānavāḥ ||14||
O Keshava, I regard all that You tell me as true. O Lord, neither gods nor Danavas know Your manifestation.
Verse 10.15
svayamevātmanātmānaṃ vettha tvaṃ puruṣottama | bhūtabhāvana bhūteśa devadeva jagatpate ||15||
You alone know Yourself through Yourself, O Supreme Person, source of beings, Lord of beings, God of gods and Lord of the world.
Verse 10.16
vaktumarhasyaśeṣeṇa divyā hyātmavibhūtayaḥ | yābhirvibhūtibhirlokānimāṃstvaṃ vyāpya tiṣṭhasi ||16||
Please describe fully Your divine manifestations through which You pervade and remain within these worlds.
Verse 10.17
kathaṃ vidyāmahaṃ yogiṃstvāṃ sadā paricintayan | keṣu keṣu ca bhāveṣu cintyo'si bhagavanmayā ||17||
O Yogi, how may I know You through constant contemplation? In which forms or states should I contemplate You, O Lord?
Verse 10.18
vistareṇātmano yogaṃ vibhūtiṃ ca janārdana | bhūyaḥ kathaya tṛptirhi śṛṇvato nāsti me'mṛtam ||18||
O Janardana, tell me again in detail Your yoga and manifestations; I am not satisfied with hearing Your nectar-like words.
Verse 10.19
hanta te kathayiṣyāmi divyā hyātmavibhūtayaḥ | prādhānyataḥ kuruśreṣṭha nāstyanto vistarasya me ||19||
Very well, O best of the Kurus, I will tell you My principal divine manifestations, for there is no end to their extent.
Verse 10.20
ahamātmā guḍākeśa sarvabhūtāśayasthitaḥ | ahamādiśca madhyaṃ ca bhūtānāmanta eva ca ||20||
O Gudakesha, I am the Self dwelling in the hearts of all beings. I am their beginning, middle and end.
Verse 10.21
ādityānāmahaṃ viṣṇurjyotiṣāṃ raviraṃśumān | marīcirmarutāmasmi nakṣatrāṇāmahaṃ śaśī ||21||
Among the Adityas I am Vishnu; among lights, the radiant sun; among the Maruts, Marichi; among the heavenly lights, the moon.

vedānāṃ sāmavedo'smi devānāmasmi vāsavaḥ | indriyāṇāṃ manaścāsmi bhūtānāmasmi cetanā ||22||
Among the Vedas I am the Sama Veda; among gods, Vasava; among the senses, the mind; in beings, consciousness.
Verse 10.23
rudrāṇāṃ śaṅkaraścāsmi vitteśo yakṣarakṣasām | vasūnāṃ pāvakaścāsmi meruḥ śikhariṇāmaham ||23||
Among the Rudras I am Shankara; among Yakshas and Rakshasas, the Lord of wealth; among the Vasus, fire; among lofty mountains, Meru.
Verse 10.24
purodhasāṃ ca mukhyaṃ māṃ viddhi pārtha bṛhaspatim | senānīnāmahaṃ skandaḥ sarasāmasmi sāgaraḥ ||24||
O Partha, know Me as Brihaspati, foremost among priests; among commanders I am Skanda, and among bodies of water, the ocean.
Verse 10.25
maharṣīṇāṃ bhṛgurahaṃ girāmasmyekamakṣaram | yajñānāṃ japayajño'smi sthāvarāṇāṃ himālayaḥ ||25||
Among great sages I am Bhrigu; among utterances, the single sacred syllable; among sacrifices, the sacrifice of recitation; among the immovable, the Himalaya.

aśvatthaḥ sarvavṛkṣāṇāṃ devarṣīṇāṃ ca nāradaḥ | gandharvāṇāṃ citrarathaḥ siddhānāṃ kapilo muniḥ ||26||
Among all trees I am the ashvattha; among divine sages, Narada; among Gandharvas, Chitraratha; among perfected beings, the sage Kapila.
Verse 10.27
uccaiḥśravasamaśvānāṃ viddhi māmamṛtodbhavam | airāvataṃ gajendrāṇāṃ narāṇāṃ ca narādhipam ||27||
Among horses know Me as Uchchaihshravas, born with the nectar of immortality; among great elephants, Airavata; among people, the ruler.
Verse 10.28
āyudhānāmahaṃ vajraṃ dhenūnāmasmi kāmadhuk | prajanaścāsmi kandarpaḥ sarpāṇāmasmi vāsukiḥ ||28||
Among weapons I am the thunderbolt; among cows, Kamadhuk; I am Kandarpa, the cause of generation, and among serpents, Vasuki.
Verse 10.29
anantaścāsmi nāgānāṃ varuṇo yādasāmaham | pitṝṇāmaryamā cāsmi yamaḥ saṃyamatāmaham ||29||
Among Nagas I am Ananta; among aquatic beings, Varuna; among ancestors, Aryaman; among those who restrain, Yama.
Verse 10.30
prahlādaścāsmi daityānāṃ kālaḥ kalayatāmaham | mṛgāṇāṃ ca mṛgendro'haṃ vainateyaśca pakṣiṇām ||30||
Among Daityas I am Prahlada; among reckoners, time; among beasts, the lion; among birds, the son of Vinata.
Verse 10.31
pavanaḥ pavatāmasmi rāmaḥ śastrabhṛtāmaham | jhaṣāṇāṃ makaraścāsmi srotasāmasmi jāhnavī ||31||
Among purifiers I am the wind; among bearers of weapons, Rama; among aquatic creatures, the makara; among rivers, Jahnavi.
Verse 10.32
sargāṇāmādirantaśca madhyaṃ caivāhamarjuna | adhyātmavidyā vidyānāṃ vādaḥ pravadatāmaham ||32||
O Arjuna, I am the beginning, end and middle of creations; among branches of knowledge, knowledge of the self; among disputants, truth-seeking dialogue.

akṣarāṇāmakāro'smi dvandvaḥ sāmāsikasya ca | ahamevākṣayaḥ kālo dhātāhaṃ viśvatomukhaḥ ||33||
Among letters I am A; among compounds, the coordinating compound. I am imperishable time and the sustainer facing everywhere.
Verse 10.34
mṛtyuḥ sarvaharaścāhamudbhavaśca bhaviṣyatām | kīrtiḥ śrīrvākca nārīṇāṃ smṛtirmedhā dhṛtiḥ kṣamā ||34||
I am death that takes everything and the arising of those yet to be. Among feminine powers I am fame, prosperity, speech, memory, intelligence, steadfastness and forgiveness.
Verse 10.35
bṛhatsāma tathā sāmnāṃ gāyatrī chandasāmaham | māsānāṃ mārgaśīrṣo'hamṛtūnāṃ kusumākaraḥ ||35||
Among Sama chants I am Brihat-Saman; among meters, Gayatri; among months, Margashirsha; among seasons, the flower-bearing spring.
Verse 10.36
dyūtaṃ chalayatāmasmi tejastejasvināmaham | jayo'smi vyavasāyo'smi sattvaṃ sattvavatāmaham ||36||
Among deceitful practices I am gambling; I am the brilliance of the brilliant, victory, determination and the goodness of those endowed with sattva.
Verse 10.37
vṛṣṇīnāṃ vāsudevo'smi pāṇḍavānāṃ dhanañjayaḥ | munīnāmapyahaṃ vyāsaḥ kavīnāmuśanā kaviḥ ||37||
Among the Vrishnis I am Vasudeva; among the Pandavas, Dhananjaya; among sages, Vyasa; among seers, Ushana the seer.
Verse 10.38
daṇḍo damayatāmasmi nītirasmi jigīṣatām | maunaṃ caivāsmi guhyānāṃ jñānaṃ jñānavatāmaham ||38||
I am the rod of those who discipline, wise policy among those seeking victory, silence concerning secrets and knowledge in the knowledgeable.
Verse 10.39
yaccāpi sarvabhūtānāṃ bījaṃ tadahamarjuna | na tadasti vinā yatsyānmayā bhūtaṃ carācaram ||39||
O Arjuna, whatever is the seed of all beings, that I am. No moving or unmoving being can exist without Me.
Verse 10.40
nānto'sti mama divyānāṃ vibhūtīnāṃ parantapa | eṣa tūddeśataḥ prokto vibhūtervistaro mayā ||40||
O scorcher of foes, there is no end to My divine manifestations. This account of their extent has been given only by way of examples.
Verse 10.41
yadyadvibhūtimatsattvaṃ śrīmadūrjitameva vā | tattadevāvagaccha tvaṃ mama tejoṃ'śasambhavam ||41||
Whatever being possesses excellence, beauty or power, understand it as arising from a portion of My splendor.
Verse 10.42
athavā bahunaitena kiṃ jñātena tavārjuna | viṣṭabhyāhamidaṃ kṛtsnamekāṃśena sthito jagat ||42||
Or, Arjuna, what need have you of so much detailed knowledge? Sustaining this entire world with a single portion of Myself, I remain.
