English meaning

English Translation: Doha: Glory to Lord Ganesha, beloved son of Mother Girija (Parvati), source of auspiciousness and supreme wisdom! Ayodhyadas prays to You: bestow upon me the divine boon of absolute fearlessness! Chaupai: Victory to the Lord of Girija, merciful to the humble, eternal protector and nourisher of saintly souls! Upon Your forehead rests the crescent moon, while serpents coil gracefully in Your ear-rings! Your fair body is sanctified by the holy Ganga flowing from Your matted locks, wearing a garland of skulls and holy ashes! Draped in the sacred tiger-skin, Your majestic appearance enchants both celestial serpents and revered sages! Beside You shines Mother Parvati, beloved daughter of Queen Maina, gracing Your left side in divine beauty! In Your holy hand gleams the trident, which destroys all negative forces and afflictions! Nandi and Ganesha stand before You like celestial lotus blossoms in an ocean of grace! Kartikeya and all divine attendants add to the glory of this incomparable vision! Whenever the gods called upon You in distress, You sheltered and preserved the worlds; When demon Taraka caused havoc, You sent Lord Kartikeya who vanquished him in a fraction of a second! You destroyed the haughty demon Jalandhara, and Your eternal fame is celebrated throughout the universe! When Tripurasura waged war against heaven, Your compassionate power rescued creation! When Bhagiratha undertook rigorous austerities, You caught the descending Ganga and fulfilled his sacred vow! Among generous givers of boons, none equals You; Your devoted servants sing Your praise day and night! The Vedas sing of Your supreme majesty, calling You unfathomable, beginningless, and boundless! When the ocean was churned and deadly poison (Halahala) emerged, threatening all life, You consumed the venom out of boundless compassion, becoming revered as Neelkantha (the blue-throated Lord)! When Lord Ramachandra worshipped You before the battle of Lanka, You blessed Him with victory and installed Vibhishana upon the throne! When Rama offered a thousand lotus blossoms and one was hidden to test his devotion, Rama prepared to offer his lotus-eye, Delighted by his pure devotion, You appeared and granted his heart's desire! Whoever recites this Shiv Chalisa with focused mind receives Lord Shiva's divine grace; Spiritual wisdom and abundance fill their home, and all suffering dissolves! The childless receive virtuous children through Shiva's blessings; Observing the sacred Trayodashi fast and offering worship before Lord Shiva cleanses sins of countless lifetimes, leading to Shiva's supreme realm! Doha: Every morning with devotion, I recite these forty verses; O Lord of the Universe, fulfill the righteous longings of my heart! Devotional Significance: Shiv Chalisa is among the most widely chanted devotional prayers across India, invoking Lord Shiva as the benevolent Ashutosh (easily pleased) who removes ignorance, fear, and karmic burdens.
